Thinking (and Rethinking) Pedagogy: A Dialogue with a Pedagogista

October 28, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm EDT

$50

What does pedagogy mean and what does it do to everyday practice? How might pedagogy serve us to reconfigure practices? And how does pedagogy connect practice to broader societal movements? The term pedagogy is now reaching mainstream usage in early childhood education, and educational contexts more broadly. In early childhood education, this might be due on one hand, to its inclusion in early learning frameworks and on the other, to the growing movement towards reconconceptualizing the field beyond care. Through a dialogue, Cristina D. Vintimilla and Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw will think with the concept of pedagogy, to consider the relation between pedagogy and the role and responsibilities of the educator and what it might mean for educators to live alongside young children and other adults.

Cristina D. Vintimilla:
Cristina pursued her pedagogista studies at the University of Siena (Italy) and she is the pedagogista at Capilano University Children’s Centre. Cristina is also faculty in the school for education and childhood studies in the same university. Her research interest addresses the ethical question of living well with others within pedagogical contexts by problematizing issues of subjectivity in relation to prescribed practices in education and communal life.

Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw:
Veronica is a Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Faculty of Education at Western University Her current research, within the Common World Childhoods Research Collective, traces the common world relations of children with places, materials, and other species. She is a founding member of the Early Childhood Pedagogies Collaboratory, a hybrid and experimental space where educators and pedagogues trace and experiment with the contours, conditions, and complexities of early childhood education pedagogies in the 21st century.
