Investigations & Expressions Professional Learning

February 7, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EST

What’s innovative in curriculum design?

Bring inquiry to your primary or junior classrooms!

As Canada’s oldest independent day and boarding school for girls, The Bishop Strachan School has learned a thing or two about balancing curriculum expectations with meaningful, emergent project work. We are our own live research hub into 21st Century learning. As a school founded on innovation, we can’t wait to share our Reggio-inspired work from Grades JK to 6. Come experience the exciting environments and projects our children are engaged in.

Investigations & Expressions 2020

All sessions offer a choice of workshops and presentations led by BSS teachers. Choose to focus on early childhood learning, or see what inquiry looks like in upper elementary grades. Develop confidence working with graphic materials, learn from real-world investigations, tour the school’s learning spaces, and use thinking routines that support collaboration and idea growth.

Summer Symposium

Looking for something more in depth? Join us for Summer Symposium. BSS teachers will share research and recent project work from this school year.

Sign up for one, two or four days of sessions.

Session 1 – An introduction to Reggio-inspired and inquiry-based pedagogy

Monday, July 6, and Tuesday, July 7, 2020
9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Are you interested in deepening classroom engagement through an inquiry-based approach? Do you want to learn more about applying Reggio-inspired principles to your classroom environment? This two-day session is designed to introduce you to inspiring ideas from educators in Reggio and North America. We will begin with an overview of history and theory, and then look at how you can develop exciting, emergent projects in your own context by developing your capacity to listen carefully to children and make their thinking visible. In hands-on sessions with members of the Junior School team (JK to Grade 6), you will explore strategies, successes and dilemmas around navigating inquiry within the Ontario Curriculum.

Session 2 – Extending the Inquiry: Deepen your work with pedagogical documentation and graphic materials

Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9, 2020
9:00 am – 3:00 pm

If you are new to Reggio-inspired pedagogy we recommend taking Session 1 first to give you a background and context for the ideas explored in this session.

Are you looking for ways to move across disciplines by bringing expressive languages into your project work? Do want to develop your ability to work with documentation to respond to children’s ideas and deepen their thinking? This two-day session is an opportunity to combine theory with practice. In hands-on sessions, you will develop your competence using a variety of tools and materials within an inquiry such as light and projection, magnification, graphic and sculptural forms. We will also explore ways that documentation can be used and displayed to support project work, group knowledge-building, teacher collaboration and theory development in children.

Price for each session: $300

Discount for all 4 days: $550

Session 3 – Leading Change: An institute for school leaders looking to promote a shift in school culture

Friday, July 10, 2020
9:00 am – 3:00 pm

A one-day session geared towards leaders (principals, team and curriculum leaders) who are working to promote a culture shift towards inquiry-based pedagogy.

The BSS Junior School has twenty years of experience in emergent curriculum to share. Learn about strategies and structures that bring innovation and promote collaboration within the team. Examine models for distributed leadership and ways to empower teachers to co-construct core values and take on professional goal setting through reflective practice.

Join us for this new one-day addition to our annual Summer Symposium. You can also sign up for the whole week program and incorporate this special day at the same price.
