Brick by Brick Series – Spring 2018 – Ann Arbor, MI

Making Children’s (and Educators’) Intelligences Visible: Bringing Back the Ninety-Nine

Featuring Karyn Callaghan, NAREA board member and Ontario Reggio Association president, and Kathy Cope, textile artist and arts education consultant

In this session, we will build on the notion of multiple literacies. By cultivating a plurality of languages, educators can bring together the materials and the children’s desires and curiosity and with them, come to know the world differently. As Loris Malaguzzi wrote, “As adults, we need the same freedom, as well as much more competence, curiosity, and imagination than we have demonstrated up to now, in order to offer children and to build with them the opportunities for learning and knowing.” In this session, we will explore the affordances of clay and plaster gauze as languages for communicating theories about and responses to the complex path we walk together each day. There will be an outdoor aspect to this experience. Participants are encouraged to bring cameras. North Campus Children’s Center will be open from 3:30-4:30 pm for those interested in visiting.
