The places of education and learning 0-11 curriculum

“Teaching to live is neither teaching to read, to write,
and mathematics, nor teaching the basic knowledge
… it is not even to focus on the quantitative
knowledge, nor fostering the specialized education:
it is to introduce a basic education that includes the
knowledge of knowledge.”
Enseigner à vivre : Manifeste pour changer l’éducation
(Teaching to live. Manifesto for a change in education)
Edgar Morin

Preface

International Summer Schools in Reggio aim to be occasions of encounter, dialogue, study, research among people from different contexts, cultures, and from different experiences. The Preschools and Infant Toddler Centres – Istituzione of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Italy have been developing a meaningful educational experience for more than 50 years. The town of Reggio Emilia has always been committed to invest in early childhood education, strongly believing that investing in education means investing in a better society.
The pedagogical and cultural experience of the municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools, known in the world as the Reggio Emilia Approach, offers itself as an example of an educational experience with an intense vitality, based on research and innovation. At international level the Reggio Emilia Approach is seen as a creative pedagogical project that enhance quality in education. The aspect of Reserch for Innovation that characterizes the pedagogical experience of Reggio Emilia has been appreciated locally, nationally and internationally. Its study in depth has encountered the interest of many teachers, pedagogistas, atelieristas, educators, researchers, administrators, artists, architects, students, politicians, policy makers, fundraisers, many people who belong not only to the educational field.
In recent years the experience of municipal infant toddler centres and preschools has developed an innovative project that goes beyond the 0-6 approach and, by involving the primary school as well, aims at a 0-11 curriculum. It is a political and participated project of the city to deepen the (educational) role of the school in the society.
The Fourth International Summer School has as its main topic the 0-11 curriculum. As part of the Reggio Emilia Approach, the curriculum is intended as a conceptual framework driving teachers’ work; it is meant as a teaching mediation between the overall objectives, knowledge, and learning processes.
In the experience of infant toddler centres and preschools and primary schools of Reggio Emilia, the structure we act in our everyday life offers a contextual idea of the curriculum, it is understood as a local outcome generated by teachers in relation to the context of the group of children and parents of the school.
The curriculum, rather than indicating a path, offers the conceptual, technical and organizational tools you ought to have in place to start a journey and to reach the goal. (Umberto Margiotta – Professor of Pedagogy – Ca’ Foscari University of Venice) Therefore, the curriculum is intended as a cultural platform around which we can build comparisons, debates, and discussions with children, teenagers, and parents.
